First, the students presented Marivaux's "La Colonie" to 2 Italian teachers who were in the school on a mobility course, watching the videos they had made where they had to rewrite the play in today's language. Then they were divided into 6 groups (3 scenes in Marivaux's "La Colonie" per group). They listed the arguments defended by the men and those defended by the women in the 3 scenes they had to work on and asked themselves if the playwright was taking sides in the debate. Then, they completed their lists by asking themselves what arguments men and women of today might defend. Finally, they summarized their thoughts on a poster that they created in English and presented it to the whole class and teachers.
The students were able to perceive the modernity of Marivaux's play, in particular the arguments of the women, and to create links between literature and their daily lives. They were also able to understand that the playwright was spreading new and constructive ideas to establish a new society later on but was not a revolutionary and did not wish to overthrow the established order. Thus, they thought about the prejudices that place women below men, but also about the inconsistencies of some women who, while wanting freedom and independence, teach their children submission.
